Bear smash burgers are a delicious and one of the easiest ways to make burgers out of ground bear meat. I used this recipe with a group of friends last summer when I hosted a “Bear Bash” – an outdoor barbeque in our backyard where I introduced bear meat to some of them for the very first time. These smash burgers were a hit, and even some of the spouses who had been a bit skeptical thoroughly enjoyed them! I will warn you, though, the recipe is very complicated.

  • Servings: 4
  • Prep Time: 15 mins
  • Cook Time: 10 mins

  • 2lbs ground bear meat
  • 1 Tbsp seasoning salt or to taste (just depends on how salty you like your burgers, I find 1 Tbsp is just right or you can always add more on top of burger once cooked)

  1. Mix the meat and seasoning well and form into over-sized golf balls, placing them on a platter.
  2. Heat up your grill until it is nice and hot, you can test if it’s ready by placing a small amount of burger on it and wait until you hear it sizzling.
  3. Once the grill is hot enough, toss several of your balls of bear burger on the hot grill and immediately press down on each of them with a metal spatula or burger press. I don’t have a press but my metal spatula did the trick.
  4. Extra tip: lay a small piece of parchment paper or wax paper between the meat and spatula when pressing down so the meat doesn’t stick to the spatula.
  5. Once flattened, cook until the underside forms a nice browned layer and then flip and cook till other side is nice and browned as well. Like pork and chicken, bear meat should be fully cooked.
  6. If your grill is hot it should only take a few minutes on each side.
  7. Remove and enjoy on your favourite type of hamburger bun and favourite fixings!
